Information about IIT Roorkee PhD Admission

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India is among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, as well as in engineering, basic and applied research. IIT Roorkee invites online application for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) admission two times in a year. Eligibility

Candidate having minimum following qualification are eligible to apply for PhD admission at IIT Roorkee.
  • Having Master’s degree with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.0 on a 10 point scale OR 60% marks for the General and OBC category.
  • Having Master’s degree with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.5 on a 10 point scale OR 55% marks for the SC / ST or PWD candidates.
  • For candidates other than Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), B.Tech / B.Arch / B.Pharm degree or equivalent with a GATE / GPAT/NET score and a minimum CGPA of 7.50 on a 10 point scale or 75% marks, irrespective of the category. 
  • For graduates from CFTIs, the minimum CGPA requirement is relaxed to 7.0 on a 10 point scale or 70% marks.

Selection Procedure

Candidate will be selected for PhD Admission at IIT Roorkee through following steps:
  1. Written Test: There will be 40 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in which 30 questions will be from respective category given above and 10 questions from Engineering Mathematics. The student need to score approximately 25 out of 40 to be eligible for the interview.
  2. Interview (If qualified in written test): Conducted same day or next day of the written test. It depends upon the number candidates available for the written test.

Written Test Syllabus

It is conducted in four different category. Student can select any one category out of four according to their choice. The syllabus for each category is specified so student can prepare for entrance exam accordingly. The syllabus for each category is given as follows:
  1. Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Drives: Phase Controlled Converters, Improved Quality Converters, Multi-Quadrant Chopper, Buck-Boost Converters, PWM Inverters, Multilevel Inverters, AC & DC Machines, Transformers, Converter/Chopper Fed DC Drive, VSI/CSI Fed Induction Motor Drive.
  2. Power System Engineering including HVDC: Load Flow Analysis, Short Circuit Analysis, Power System Protection, HVDC Systems, Power Quality, Operation and Control of Power System.
  3. Instrumentation and Signal Processing including Biomedical Instrumentation: Instrumentation and Measurement, Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing, Biomedical Instrumentation and Digital Measurement Techniques.
  4. System and Control including Robotics: Principles of System Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, Advanced Control Systems, Optimal Control System, Computer Controlled Systems, Digital Control Techniques and Optimization Techniques.
