Introduction to Power Electronics

It combines three things Control, Power and Electronics which have been given as below:
  1. Control: It deals with the steady state and dynamic characteristics of closed loop system.
  2. Power: It deals with the static and rotating power equipment for the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power.
  3. Electronics: It deals with the solid state devices and circuits for signal processing to meet the desired control objectives.
Hence power electronics may be defined as: The applications of solid-state electronics for the control and conversion of electric power.


Modern power electronics equipment uses Power Semiconductor and Microelectronics:
  1. Power Semiconductors: It can be regarded as the muscle.
  2. Microelectronics: It has the power and intelligence of a brain.

Application of Power Electronics:

  1. Heat controls.
  2. Light controls.
  3. Motor controls.
  4. Power supplies.
  5. Vehicle propulsion systems.
  6. HVDC systems.
